This is the official website of Boy Scout Troop 23, in Tallahassee, Florida, sponsored by Killearn United Methodist Church. Our troop is proud of our 20-year history of preparing young men for adulthood through scouting, which encourages citizenship, service, moral strength and character, and personal fitness. We meet every Monday throughout the year in the KUMC Youth Building. Meetings begin at 7 PM and are generally over by 8:30. Click here for more information about our troop.

While we may be bragging, we think we have a great troop. We have approximately 50 scouts ranging from 11 to 18. We are blessed with a highly supportive sponsor, a great facility, and highly involved parents. This allows us to be a highly active troop.

We camp every month, generally at state parks within a 100-mile radius of Tallahassee. However, we also regularly travel to great camping spots such as Pine Mountain and Stone Mountain in Georgia, and the Battleship Alabama in Mobile. We attend two summer camps annually - the Council summer camp at Wallwood, and Camp Daniel Boone in North Carolina, which offers a variety of weeklong backpacking trips in addition to merit badge advancement. In addition, we have an aggressive program of High Adventure camping. In the summer of 2002, we spent a week camping, sailing, and snorkeling in the Florida Keys. In the summer of 2003, we will attend the Northern Tier High Adventure Canoe Base in northern Minnesota, and in 2004 we will return to the Florida Keys at Christmas time and will attend the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in New Mexico. We are also planning trips to backpack along the Appalachian Trail and camp/hike in Colorado and Yellowstone National Park. Click here for our troop calendar for 2002.

Unique to Troop 23 is our scholarship program. With the benefit of our highly successful fundraiser (selling Christmas trees at the church each December), we dedicate a portion of our proceeds for scholarships that our scouts can earn to help pay for troop activities. Scouts earn points for attending meetings in full uniform, for attaining rank and merit badge advancement, for service hours worked, and for going on campouts and other troop activities. Scouts who are making good progress will generally earn enough scholarship points to pay for their summer camp, and they can save these funds from year to year to pay for High Adventure trips.

Click here for stories and photos from our camping trips (written by our scouts). This is updated each month. Also available on this site are copies of our monthly newsletter (click here).

We welcome Webalos scouts and others who are interested in joining our troop to visit us at any meeting! You can also e-mail us gvanl@yahoo.com. Scouts wishing to post material to the website should send it to our webmaster.

We are hoping that this site will be a virtual meeting place for scouts to communicate about scouting and share memories of troop activities. We are looking for stories and photos to share on the site. We are also hoping to provide other scouting material that will supplement current meetings and camping trips.
