Scoutmaster Corner

Our report of the November campout was written by Spencer Klay:

On November 8,2002 we went on the big yellow church bus to Pensacola where we had to pitch tents in the dark. The following morning we went to a Navy cafeteria and had breakfast. Then we went to a big museum where we saw many large airplanes. Later we went to the air show where the Blue Angels flew their last show for the year. The next day we again had breakfast at the cafeteria then we went on a hike we heard was 10 miles long but it seemed shorter. That evening we went on the bus to Mobile Alabama where we curiously investigated the huge U.S.S Alabama and played capture the flag. On Veterans Day, a few of us went in the big submarine, then we all came back to Tallahassee.

Our next campout will be January 18-20 when we go to Pine Mountain, GA.  We will leave Saturday at 8:00 AM and should get back on Monday between 2 and 4 PM (Monday is the MLK Holiday).  We will have three groups at the camp; one that does 2 days of backpacking (about 20 miles); one that does an overnight backpacking trip (about 10 miles); and one that stays in base camp and does a 5-mile hike.  Due to the transportation situation with the church (not all planned vehicles are in yet), we may need some adults to drive their own cars.  Due to the number of hiking groups, we will need at least six adults to go on the trip.

Calendar

Our 2003 Calendar is attached, but is subject to some change.  FSU still hasn’t published its football schedule, so the dates of the fall campouts could change somewhat.

Help Wanted

We need an adult to volunteer for the job of treasurer.  This person handles the troop’s finances, including receiving monthly camping fees, maintaining scout scholarship accounts, and maintaining the troop’s financial records.  This critical person needs to attend all troop meetings and troop committee meetings, and needs accounting/bookkeeping skills.  They will be trained by Alan Null, our current treasurer.  Let me or Alan know if you are interested.

Scholarship Points

As a reminder, our scholarship point year runs from March 1 to February 28.  Thus, scouts have until the end of February to finish rank and merit badge advancements and to turn in service hours that will count for this scholarship year.  The Troop Committee will decide how much money to allocate to scholarship funds.  Last year, each point equated to $1 in scholarship funds.

Tree Sale

Thanks to everyone who helped on the Christmas tree sale fundraiser.  We sold most of the trees, and will have a calculation of the net proceeds soon.  It will fund our troop activities as well as scholarships for the next year.
