Scoutmaster’s Corner

We had two good camping trips in October, with 14 scouts participating in Junior Leader Training at St. George Island and 20 going on the Wallwood Scout Olympics campout last weekend.  Several scouts achieved rank advancements, and we had 8 Webalos scouts visit us during the day.  Great performances at the Olympics included Casey Lillibridge’s usual win in Deer Stalking, Eric Null’s win in Boy Scout Jeopardy, and Aditya Pamidi’s great shot in the closest to the pin golf competition (less than 2 feet away)!   Several scouts had close shots, often helped by neighboring trees.

We will go on a great campout next weekend (November 10-12) to the Pensacola Naval Air Station to see an air show and to spend Saturday night on the Battleship Alabama in Mobile.  We will leave Friday from the church at 1 PM (Friday is the Veteran’s Day holiday), and will get back late Sunday afternoon (probably around 4 PM).

Upcoming Events

We will set up the tree lot this Saturday, November 4, and need scouts and parents to come out.  It won’t take too long if we have a lot of people helping.  We will start at 8 AM at the church and should be done by noon.

Any parents who haven’t signed up for Christmas tree sale slots need to do so ASAP!  Remember, the trees will arrive the day after Thanksgiving and we will need people to unload the truck that day.  The lot will open on that Saturday.

There will be an honor court to recognize scouts who have achieved advancements on November 20.  Scouts should bring a drink (2 liter) or snacks (cookies, chips) to the meeting for the refreshments after the meeting.

Our meeting schedule will be abbreviated in December due to the holidays (see box).   Also, I will be out of town from November 30 to December 10 on a trip to Nigeria to participate in a National Conference of State Legislatures technical assistance team to the Nigerian National Assembly.  Nigeria is emerging from 16 years of military rule and is trying to build a foundation for democracy.  I’ll do a presentation on the trip at an upcoming Honor Court.   However, we will still meet December 4, and will work on the Salesmanship and American Business merit badges during the month.
