Our report
of the October campout was written by Spencer Klay:
Welcome to Perry Camporee 2002
Our Troop 23 and many other troops camped together for two
nights at the big camporee field in Perry, FL on October 18-20. The Perry
camporee was all about the forest industry. There were all kinds of giant
machines on display that are used for cutting down trees, piling them, lifting
them, and taking them to tree processing plants. All of the games were about
forestry. Our guys practiced fire fighting (with plastic flames), sawed big
logs, lifted a log, identified trees, measured tree height, and did other
things. The weather was pretty nice and people had a good time.
Our next campout will be November
8-11 when we go to Pensacola to see the naval air show, hike a historic trail,
and stay on the USS Alabama. We will
leave Friday at 5:30 and should get back on Monday between 2 and 3 PM. Note that due to the Monday holiday
(Veteran’s Day) this campout is longer than usual. The airshow is always great, the scouts will get a medal for
hiking the historic trail, and hopefully they will even get some sleep on the
Alabama (the game of capture the flag usually goes on for hours there).
Help Wanted
We still an
adult to volunteer for the job
of logistics coordinator for the next year. This person handles making reservations for our campouts and
handling associated paperwork with the council and the church. Lori Smith, who has done a superb job with
this over the past year, will be available to help train the new person. Let me or Ms. Smith know if you are
interested.
Eagle Ceremonies
Mark your
calendars to attend two more Eagle Ceremonys.
Eric Null and Matt Fair will have
their ceremony on November 17 (2 PM) at the Union Ballroom at FSU. Zack Merydith will have his ceremony the
following Sunday, November 24, at Good Shepard Catholic Church (also 2PM). All scouts should attend.
Christmas
Trees
By now all
parents should have signed up for their shifts at the tree lot. Also remember if you have signed up to help
set up the tree lot this month, and we will need you to help unload the trees
when the trucks arrive.
